Pregnancy and breastfeeding: cosmetic products
During pregnancy, you can continue to use all the cosmetic products that form part of your daily routine, whether for hygiene (shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant, etc.), beauty (face cream, body treatments, make-up, etc.) or sun protection (sun cream), taking a precautionary approach only with certain specific types of product. With very few exceptions, all BioNike products for the face, body, hair, hygiene, skincare, make-up and sun protection can be used during pregnancy.
As a precaution, it is best to avoid dyeing your hair, at least during the first trimester of pregnancy. (There are no specific contraindications to the use of permanent hair dyes on the foetus. However, as it is not possible to carry out clinical trials on pregnant women and given the increased skin sensitivity during this period, the use of SHINE ON and SHINE ON HS PLUS is not recommended as a precaution, especially during the first trimester) . It is also advisable to seek medical advice regarding the use of topical products containing retinol and/or retinoids, the use of hair loss lotions, and the intake of dietary supplements (unless these are already expressly contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding).
Yes, all our facial and body care products can be used whilst breastfeeding. This also applies to all body care products in the DEFENCE MY BODY range and to the DEFENCE MY BODY Cellulite Treatment medical device. The only products where you need to check for any specific warnings are dietary supplements.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding: food supplements
It is always advisable to seek your doctor’s advice before taking food supplements during pregnancy and whilst breastfeeding, unless the supplement is already expressly advised against during these periods.
Food supplements and treatments
Food supplements are generally formulated in accordance with regulations and are safe, with no contraindications for people in good health, unless they have any allergies or intolerances to specific ingredients.
In the event of medical conditions, illnesses, concurrent medication (e.g. for low blood sugar, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, etc.) or other types of medical treatment (such as cancer treatments involving chemotherapy or radiotherapy), we recommend consulting your doctor to assess the appropriateness and benefits of taking a supplement, including in relation to the dosages of the ingredients it contains.
Children and babies: which cosmetics?
Under EC Regulation No. 1223/2009 and subsequent amendments, cosmetics may contain the same ingredients for both adults and children, with rare exceptions and specific restrictions (e.g. fluoride limits in toothpastes, a ban on salicylic and boric acids for children under 3 years of age). https://eur-lex.europa.eu/legal-content/IT/TXT/PDF/?uri=CELEX:32009R1223 Apart from certain ingredients that, logically, are not used in formulations for children (e.g. anti-ageing peptides), what distinguishes products intended for children under the age of 3 is the product safety assessment: a report drawn up by the manufacturer, in accordance with the regulations, which forms an integral part of the PIF (Product Information File), and which is specific as it is drawn up in relation to a child’s body weight.
From a regulatory perspective, 3 years is the age limit: if a product is not specifically labelled for children, it may be used from the age of 3 onwards, whilst always ensuring that parental supervision is adjusted according to the child’s age and the type of product. For children under the age of 3 and infants, it is always preferable to opt for cosmetics specifically labelled for ‘infants and children’.
Children and babies: which sun creams?
The products in the DEFENCE SUN ‘adult’ range are suitable and safe for children aged 3 and over. For children under the age of 3, however, it is recommended to choose the specific DEFENCE SUN BABY & KID products, not because they contain ‘child-specific’ filters, but because their safety assessment is based on exposure to each individual ingredient in the formula, taking into account the skin surface area to body weight ratio of infants (which is, of course, much higher than that of adults).
Teenagers: which cosmetics?
All cosmetic products are safe for children, teenagers and adults. There are simply a few common-sense guidelines: hair dyes are not recommended for under-16s, and it makes no sense for a teenager to use an anti-ageing cream. However, teenagers with acne-prone skin can use specific treatments, just as they may need to use a deodorant.
Are BioNike cosmetics vegan & cruelty-free?
Yes. All BioNike products comply with EU legislation (Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009) and are not tested on animals, firstly as a matter of corporate policy and secondly because animal testing is prohibited by the aforementioned regulation and subsequent amendments.
Whilst we strictly comply with current legislation on cosmetic products, we do not use lanolin or its derivatives (which are potentially allergenic) nor carmine in our make-up (a pigment of animal origin that may cause allergic reactions in individuals sensitised to its main component, carminic acid). Many derivatives (such as stearic acid, glycerine and pentylene glycol) are of plant origin. However, in rare cases, some products may contain ingredients classified as animal-derived or semi-synthetic ingredients, such as beeswax (INCI: cera alba), hydrolysed collagen, keratin or beeswax derivatives (behenyl beeswax, stearyl beeswax). The few ingredients of animal origin used do not, in any case, involve animal suffering (bees are not killed to obtain the wax; hydrolysed collagen is derived from the upcycling of waste from other manufacturing processes; and keratin is obtained from fibres or shorn fleece).
As there is no official, universally accepted definition of a ‘vegan product’ and some semi-synthetic ingredients may be partially derived from animals, there is no list of BioNike products that can be defined as such.
Hair dye: how it works and allergies
These dyes are of the ‘oxidative’ type, as they require the mixing, just before application, of specific colouring agents contained in the tube of colouring cream with the hydrogen peroxide cream (20-volume) contained in the bottle of developer cream. The colour forms directly within the hair as a result of the reaction between the colouring intermediates and the developer: if this series of reactions does not take place, the colour will not form.
To achieve full-coverage shades, it is essential to use substances from the phenylenediamine family (a group of molecules that are prone to reacting with one another). Among these, PARAPHENYLENEDIAMINE (PPD) is the most commonly used and is known to be a strong sensitiser, i.e. a substance that frequently causes allergic reactions. In SHINE ON and SHINE ON HS PLUS, we avoid using PPD. It should be noted, however, that PPD is not the only substance that poses a risk: in general, all hair dyes can cause reactions (to a greater or lesser extent) in sensitised individuals.
Both ranges are nickel-tested, ammonia-free, resorcinol-free and preservative-free:
• SHINE ON: is formulated without para-phenylenediamine (PPD, a strong sensitiser), which is replaced by para-toluenediamine (PTD), a substance that is far less likely to cause sensitisation.
• SHINE ON HS PLUS: is formulated without any phenylenediamine (neither PPD nor PTD). Instead, it uses ME-PPD (INCI: 2-methoxymethyl-p-phenylenediamine), an alternative molecule with a lower allergenic potential than PPD and PTD, according to scientific literature.
Yes, although hair dyes are designed to minimise the risk of allergies, this risk cannot be completely eliminated. For this reason, it is compulsory to carry out an Allergy Alert Test 48 hours before each application, even if you have been using the same colour or brand for some time, as sensitisation can develop over the years. The absence of a reaction to the test provides reasonable assurance, although it does not entirely rule out future reactions.
There are no specific contraindications regarding the use of permanent hair dyes on the foetus. However, as it is not possible to carry out clinical trials on pregnant women, and given that skin sensitivity may vary during this period, the use of SHINE ON and SHINE ON HS PLUS is not recommended as a precautionary measure (particularly during the first trimester).
Hair dye: mixing and storage
No. As stated in the package leaflet under ‘Precautions for use’: ‘Avoid mixing: different colours; with similar products; or with oxidising agents not specified in the instructions’. There are no contraindications; however, this method of use may result in an unintended colour outcome. Added to this is the possibility that any ‘leftover’ colour cream may deteriorate between uses, even if the tube(s) have been carefully resealed. As these are home-use hair dyes, we recommend consulting a professional hairdresser to achieve a precise colour adjustment. BioNike cannot be held responsible for any unsatisfactory colour results if the product has been used without strictly following the precautions for use.
No. SHINE ON is a single-use product. The two components (colouring cream and developer) must be mixed together completely, and the resulting mixture must not be kept for a second application. Any leftover mixture must be discarded.
No. The kit is standard (50 ml of cream and 75 ml of developer in a 1:1.5 ratio) for medium-length hair. As this is a home-use product, the individual components are not sold separately. Please also note that the oxygen supplied is 20-volume for almost all shades, with the exception of SHINE ON 10 EXTRA LIGHT BLONDE, which uses 30-volume oxygen.
Hair dye and henna treatments
Applying SHINE ON to hair coloured with henna may cause compatibility issues. The unpredictable interaction between impurities in the henna and the oxidative hair colour may lead to unpredictable colour results, particularly if the henna was applied recently. The colour tests carried out on all batches of SHINE ON are, in fact, conducted on strands of NATURAL hair (i.e. neither bleached nor coloured in any other way) and on strands with varying percentages of grey hair; therefore, it is not possible to predict the colour result on hair previously coloured with henna.
Generally speaking, it is advisable to wait around 2–3 months from the last henna application before using an oxidative hair dye. It should also be noted that, apart from natural henna, which colours the hair exclusively in shades of red, hair dyes – even those based on dyeing herbs – still contain hair colourants that are mixed with an oxidising agent (the instructions for use and list of ingredients help to determine whether the basic colouring mechanism is of the oxidative type).
