HYALURONIC ACID: PROPERTIES AND BENEFITS

Hyaluronic acid is one of the best-known and most highly regarded ingredients in the world of skincare, thanks to its extraordinary moisturising, elasticity-boosting and plumping properties. Naturally present in our skin, it plays a vital role in maintaining the skin’s hydration and biomechanical properties.

Over time, however, the production of hyaluronic acid gradually decreases, contributing to the onset of dryness, loss of elasticity and wrinkles.

WHAT IS HYALURONIC ACID AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

Hyaluronic acid is a polysaccharide belonging to the glycosaminoglycan (GAG) family; it is therefore a polymer composed of a long sequence of two simple sugars, glucuronic acid and N-acetylglucosamine. It is naturally present in various tissues of our body, such as the joints and the skin, where it is the main component of the extracellular matrix (ECM) of the dermis: the complex three-dimensional network that surrounds and supports the cells, the fibroblasts.

Its most interesting characteristic is its extraordinary ability to bind up to 1,000 times its weight in water, acting like a sponge-like molecule that imparts firmness, suppleness and elasticity whilst maintaining an adequately hydrated environment. It is no coincidence that hyaluronic acid is often described as a veritable water reservoir for the skin. Furthermore, it plays an important role in the physiological processes of epidermal renewal and repair, so much so that it is also synthesised by keratinocytes.

With age, the synthesis of hyaluronic acid gradually decreases in both the fibroblasts of the dermis and the keratinocytes (epidermis). For this reason, incorporating it into one’s daily skincare routine can be a successful cosmetic strategy to combat dehydration, improve the skin’s appearance and, in the long term, prevent the signs of ageing.

MOLECULAR WEIGHT AND PROPERTIES OF HYALURONIC ACID

Not all hyaluronic acid is the same! The factor that influences its functional properties is its molecular weight – in other words, the size of the molecules that make it up.
Thanks to modern production methods – namely biotechnology – this valuable biopolymer is used in cosmetics at various molecular weights:
  • High-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid: acts mainly on the skin’s surface, forming a moisturising film that helps to limit water loss and makes the skin immediately softer and smoother.
  • Medium/low molecular weight hyaluronic acid: thanks to its smaller size, it can penetrate the layers of the epidermis, providing moisturising and plumping effects.
  • Ultra-low molecular weight hyaluronic acid: particularly small fragments that are able to penetrate deep into the layers of the epidermis, improving the skin’s firmness and elasticity.
The combined use of hyaluronic acid with different molecular weights therefore enables the development of cosmetic treatments with multi-level moisturising action, as the different molecular sizes penetrate and act at different depths within the skin’s structure.

DEEP AND IMMEDIATE HYDRATION

Hydration is undoubtedly the best-known benefit of hyaluronic acid. Thanks to its hygroscopic and film-forming properties, this molecule reduces natural water loss (TEWL, Trans-Epidermal Water Loss), improving the skin’s hydration levels and counteracting the feeling of tight skin. High-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid is particularly useful due to its action on the skin’s surface, whilst lower-molecular-weight hyaluronic acid promotes deep hydration within the layers of the epidermis, with plumping effects. The result is skin that looks fresher, softer and more radiant, with a feeling of comfort that can be felt immediately after application.

SKIN ELASTICITY AND FIRMNESS

Properly hydrated skin also appears more supple and smooth.
When the skin is dehydrated, however, it can appear less supple, rougher and more marked by fine dehydration lines.
Hyaluronic acid helps to maintain hydration and improve the skin’s surface appearance; furthermore, particularly when it is low molecular weight, it helps to enhance the skin’s elasticity, contributing to a more toned and revitalised appearance.

VOLUMISING AND SMOOTHING EFFECT

Among the most highly prized cosmetic benefits of hyaluronic acid are its plumping and smoothing effects.
Its ability to retain water helps to increase the firmness of the epidermal layers, helping to make the fine lines typical of dehydrated skin less noticeable.
Formulations containing multi-molecular hyaluronic acid are designed to deliver synergistic effects: they smooth the skin’s surface, improve both surface and deep hydration, and leave the skin looking visibly smoother.

HYALURONIC ACID IN DAILY SKIN CARE AND AS A CONCENTRATED TREATMENT

Thanks to its versatility, hyaluronic acid can be incorporated into various stages of a skincare routine, through creams, serums and specific treatments, for all skin types.
The choice of formulation is generally guided by the cosmetic objective: from creamy textures for daily moisturising to concentrated treatments, designed to give your skincare routine a boost and tackle the signs of skin ageing, including as a preventative measure.
BioNike offers a range of solutions that harness the properties of hyaluronic acid, incorporating it into formulations designed to meet the skin’s various needs and deliver the desired cosmetic results.

DEFENCE HYDRACTIVE: 100-hour adaptive hydration that adapts to your skin

Multi-molecular hyaluronic acid and ectoine work in synergy: they strengthen the skin’s natural moisture barrier by forming a protective ‘moisture shell’ around the cells, which retains water whilst adapting to environmental conditions and protects against all kinds of external stressors.
